Theatre, theatre and awards dinner
Theatre
So I have been quiet on here for the past week as it’s been another busy one…..two very different types of theatre have featured!
My Dad has suffered for ages with bad hips. I have arthritis in my right hip, but nowhere near on his scale, so its something we have all wanted him to have done for ages and ages.
He got a cancellation for last Thursday, so I was up early to drop them over at the hospital before 7 am. I can’t believe that his hip was replaced using an epidural – with no general anaesthetic! Everything went well, he even walked just a few hours after the operation. There were a few hiccups – I didn’t realise that sometimes elderly people have other side effects when they have ops. We are not sure if it was the operation, the fact the hospital gave him pain relief that he is allergic too or a water infection but we had a few worrying days of him being very confused.
Eddie reviewed the menu everytime we visited, and he has already decided that he only wants to go in Monday-Wednesday as that’s the best food apparently. Actually, the food looked really nice, still wouldn’t want to be in there though.
He finally came out of the hospital on Monday, it’s so nice for him to be back home with my mum. I doubt very much that he will have the other one done, but hopefully it will keep him mobile for a little longer.
Theatre 2

Last Thursday night (the same day as my dad’s op) we had tickets for the theatre. We had some money for our wedding anniversary and decided to use it for theatre tickets. Obviously, our last theatre trip was in London to see the brilliant Aladdin (a link to that post is here) This time it was a play rather than musical – Sherlock Holmes, the Final Curtain. I have always been a fan of Sherlock, right back from the Basil Rathbone days to the more modern Benedict Cumberbatch version.
Originally I was going to write a proper review, but to be honest, I would struggle so here is a very short write up…….
Sherlock Holmes – The Final Curtain
This was on in Nottingham at the Theatre Royal to 4th to 9 June 2018. To say I was a little disappointed by this play was an understatement. The first act was 45 mins but it felt like it never really got started. This play is set at a time when Sherlock has retired to the seaside. A dead body is on the private beach behind Sherlock’s home.
Whilst you would imagine that this would set the story up for some twists and turns in a clever plot. Alas, this never happens. Sherlock is able to convince the detective that the body was poisoned, end of the scene. Next Mary Watson turns up. Some vague storyline about how she and John had returned to Baker Street but were now estranged. The story then turns to Mary and Johns son, who despite being dead, had suddenly started appearing to them at Baker Street.
The sets were not very exciting. The Baker Street set was quite well laid out, but all of the other scenes were a desk and coat stand in a radio studio or a bench. Literally, no expense spent!
Despite the poor first 45 minutes, we decided to stay for the second act after the interval. We bought a magnum and some crisps to snack on, which we were still munching on when the next act started.
Bearing in mind the seating tier we were on was virtually empty, you could hear a pin drop. All we could hear was a squeak squeak sound as the woman who almost stumbled into our laps at the start of play kept opening miniature bottles of wine! So imagine how we felt when she then turned around to us and told us off for eating our crisps as we were too noisy!! I felt like a naughty child.
The play never really improved. A few characters were introduced for the sake of it I thought. Mycroft, Sherlock’s brother was on a park bench scene with Sherlock where he basically invited him down to London. He was in the next scene for about 2 mins before leaving and that was that. Why the writer introduced him I will never know. Watson was missing from most of the second Act which was a shame really. There is a twist in the second act which you could see coming, but which I didn’t like at all. I won’t detail it here as it would be a spoiler.
If I was asked to score this play I would give it a 2 out of 5. I never expected it to live up to Arthur Conan Doyles version of Sherlock, but I preferred Anthony Horowitz’s The House of Silk novel, as it was more like the Sherlock I know and love than the one depicted in this play.
Brunch and shopping
On Friday night Eddie and I didn’t bother going to bed. We had to go to the airport at 2.30 am on Saturday. My in-laws were off to Poland. We got back at 4 am and got a few hours of sleep before waking up to call my mum to see how my dad was.
We were off into town with Tom, he needed all of his supplies for when he goes to NCS in a couple of weeks. A Primark trip was in order, but first, we went for breakfast.
We decided to go to Red Dog and ordered an American Breakfast. If I am honest it wasn’t a patc
h on Annie’s Burger Shack, it was expensive and the coffees were not refillable.
The pancake was huge and mine was a little overcooked. It was possibly the largest and thickest pancake I have ever seen. But it kind of resembled a sponge in the way it sucked up all of the syrup in the place!
I don’t think that the hash browns were homemade. The bacon was a little overcooked, but the eggs were perfect.
After brunch, it was a visit to Primark – we picked up several pairs of joggers, some T-Shirts, a few hoodies etc. He is all set now for his trip. Then it was back to the hospital – at the end of the day, I was shattered!
Sunday was a quick food shop and Ewan’s rugby presentation followed by more visiting.
Awards Dinner
The company I work for have a really big event every year called Innovation Day. We used to all help out, but the events team manage it so well now that they don’t need help. This year we were allowed to attend the awards dinner if we wanted to.
The event was held at The Nottingham Belfry – the food was delicious and the entertainment (Rob Deering) was brilliant. It’s great seeing all the companies winning awards. These companies all make such a difference with their innovative ideas and solutions.
I must admit I may have had slightly too much prosecco at the event! It was a great night!! This morning we all had a big breakfast at Annies Burger Shack to celebrate the start of the world cup. I went for “The Lumberjack” and it was amazing – I didn’t get any pics this time as it was a work outing, but you should definitely check it out, the menu is here.
That’s my week 🙂
Eddie and I have been to the Glee comedy club tonight – hopefully, I will get another post up this weekend!
