Running for beginners

As I mentioned in my last post (I think?!?) I have started running again. Its hard work, both trying to get fitness back and also hard to make time when life is crazy. I thought I would share my tips for getting (back) into an activity. This can also be used as running tips for beginners.

Here are my tips for getting back to being active / running for beginners tips.

  1. Set yourself some shorter-term Goals – at the moment my goal is to run 5k – I want to ultimately run further again but I need to start small!
  2. Find a like-minded group – I have joined a ladies running group that is running a Couch 2 5k program. Its good for the support and to make friends with like-minded people. We have already made a little sub-group that runs on a Saturday in addition to the Tues and Thurs runs.
  3. Do the activity on a regular basis so that it can become a habit!
  4. Make a commitment to yourself and running friends! You are more likely to go out in bad weather than to let them down. I found this out in the freezing cold wind last week! but was glad I did.
  5. Get the correct kit! I am still using my old kit but I am going to list below the things on my wishlist for when I can afford them (or for hints for Mothers Day etc!)
  6. Think of your reason why – this is something I first heard at WW last year and it stuck with me. Think about why you are doing it. For me, I enjoy running. The feeling I get when I have finished a good run, and to meet health and fitness goals. I want to be able to still move when I am in my 60’s!! Having seen my parents go through hip replacements (and knowing I have arthritic hips) I need to stay as mobile as I can to help when the time comes for me too.
  7. Book a race? I really want something to aim for, for after finishing the Couch 2 5k – I am looking at 10k races. I don’t want to be the next Mo Farah, it’s purely for enjoyment.

Here is my Running Wishlist

Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any fitness goals for this year. If you are beginning to run I would love to hear about it too.

These sound like brilliant tips for getting back into an activity! Thank you for sharing, Julie. I’m not a runner, but I have recently got back into swimming and going to fitness classes. Doing these on a regular basis so they become a habit is a great tip and has worked well so far for me. I like to do it first thing in the morning at the same time so it is just part of my routine. All the best with your running and good luck with your fitness goals! <3 xx
